The continuous need towards improving the capacity of magnetic storage devices requires materials with strong perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. FePd, CoPd and their Co(Fe)Pt counterparts very attractive candidate for such purposes. The magnetic properties of these films are largely dependent on the orientation and local distribution of the L10 FePd phase fraction which are mainly controlled by diffusion processes and involve diffusion paths of a few angstroms...

[texts]Validating Lidar Depolorization Calibration using Solar Radiation Scattered by Ice Clouds - Liu, Zhao-Yang
This letter proposes the use of solar background radiation scattered by ice clouds for validating space lidar depolarization calibration. The method takes advantage of the fact that the background light scattered by ice clouds is almost entirely unpolarized. The theory is examined with Cloud Physics Lidar (CPL) background light measurements.

[texts]Geomagnetic Cutoff Rigidity Computer Program: Theory, Software Description and Example - Smart, D. F.
The access of charged particles to the earth from space through the geomagnetic field has been of interest since the discovery of the cosmic radiation. The early cosmic ray measurements found that cosmic ray intensity was ordered by the magnetic latitude and the concept of cutoff rigidity was developed. The pioneering work of Stoermer resulted in the theory of particle motion in the geomagnetic field, but the fundamental mathematical equations developed have 'no solution in closed form'...

The problem is addressed to find a 1-1 mapping of the vertices of a binary tree onto those of a target binary tree such that the son of a node on the first binary tree is mapped onto a descendent of the image of that node in the second binary tree. There are two natural measures of the cost of this mapping, namely the dilation cost, i.e., the maximum distance in the target binary tree between the images of vertices that are adjacent in the original tree...

We tested several contrasting predictions of these hypotheses by direct intracortical analysis of neural activity in monkeys...
